F. Lynn, I can understand your wishing a "quick" précis to save yourself time. However, this is a multi-layered sub-industry with many alliances and subsectors; it would take as long to give you a truly full and informative answer, complete with the necessary subtleties as it would for you to do the due diligence yourself. This is not like the Dell thread or some of the more esoteric and desperately technical software threads, which can be daunting.

You've dealt with the CFA exam cycle. You should be able to handle this due diligence with ease.

No one is answering, F, so I'll just suggest you check into EMC for yourself, but I believe you will find that something in the neighborhood of 1/2 their revenue is from the sale of software that they write for themselves. It's a big percentage, anyway. This compares to smaller storage companies, like MTIC, that don't write their own software and therefore vend Legato products, for example, with their data storage solutions.
