It's not relevent to this discussion, but your insight is almost identical to some comments I made about a week ago here. Most of the "light" stuff is the end of the road for communications, at least as far out as I've read and I can think for now.

However, as far as computing is concerned, photonics might be interesting for that, but the real "backstop" is quantum computing:
