Van Wagoner:Higher Rates Force Money Into 'New Economy'

NEW YORK -- Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, who is using interests rates to try to cool off the economy, is really forcing more money into the new economy and out of the old economy, said Garrett Van Wagoner, portfolio manager for Van Wagoner Funds.

"Higher interest rates would definitely effect the fundamentals of old-economy companies much more than in the new economy," Van Wagoner told CNBC in an interview Thursday.

Higher-tech, new-economy companies aren't affected as much by interest rates because they are equity financed and the valuations are so high that the companies are coming to market with free capital at this point, he said.

Van Wagoner likes Ariba Inc. (ARBA) because it is in the business-to-business space and has a number of agreements coming out that will propel the stock higher.

He also likes Interwoven Inc. (IWOV), Cobalt Group Inc. (CBLT) and Netro Corp. (NTRO).
