You may gain a better understanding of Qualcomm's patent portfolio by listening to COO Rich Sulpizio's 1/27/00 interview:

Efficacy is much more important than number in evaluating a patent portfolio, but since that entails more technical acumen than most are capable of, I would suggest one use the YoY revenue stream as an indicator of strength.

kyros, i think your post is one of the most important i've read. i wrote "thousands" because i had recalled they had a ton - but couldn't recall if i'd read 700 or 7000, so i fudged it. it may be that the patent search on-line is not that efficient, but in the 100's sounds more likely than the thousands.
but most interesting, and troubling to me, is that you write the key patents expire 2006. do you recall your source?
