(Toshiba Satellite 2100CDT) but with the much better TFT screen for $1299.99 at ecost.com! Very good deal for a TFT-equipped laptop!

Nice find. I agree. I would prefer one of the ultra portables...but I have not seen one that fits the bill. The $1500 Sony is $1800 by the time you add the external CDROM...and more by the time you add a serial and parallel port. Adding extras defeats the purpose of the laptop. So it is probably better to go with the full size laptops with all of the goodies built in.

The 2100CDT only has 2 hr battery time. Some of its bigger sisters have 3 hrs...still short but about the norm. The longer life machine is also about a half pound heavier. The ultra portables are about 3 pounds. The full size laptops are about six. You will notice the weight if you have to lug one of these things around. The laptop I had ten years ago must have weighed closer to 15 pounds.

I think I can live with the two hour battery as I am planning on getting the DC adapter and running it off a twelve volt battery.

I still can not figure out what type of pointing device it has.

I still have time...unless I go for Go America goamerica.net mobile wireless. $379 for the PC slot wireless modem and $59 for unlimited mobile wireless ISP. However it is very slow...max 19kbps. It is better than nothing. If I wait six months (I hate waiting) both the laptop and the mobile wireless may offer better opportunities.

I do not want to make too much money to quickly..it would disqualify me for a ROTH IRA<g>
