Grace, thanks for that link. I recall reading that piece when it was published, and your posting it here serves to jog the memory.

I began looking more closely at DEN after I posted the message upstream (1039) the other day "in my spare time."

In the article you posted, and in other references I've visited in the past couple of days, I began seeing some similarities between DEN and the central intelligence depository (and other attributes) of advanced information networking (AIN) and signaling system no.7 (SS7) of the public switched telephone network, or PSTN. The combined AIN/SS7 attributes of the PSTN make up what is now characterized as smart networks.

I can't help thinking about how today's prevailing "stupid" network leanings --which are held by many Internet architects-- eschew such forms of centralized intelligence designs. Comments, corrections welcome.
