There is more wealth than ever before in history partly because of these 401Ks and matching programs by corporations. There's a nice post by Bill Fishofer to me on EMC thread today which I also reproduced on our options thread, I think it's more insightful than this discussion on what is really shaping economic health right now.

Also as a country we're paying off our debt

But I'm not really the right person to discuss this with, as I can't hold my own in this argument, I'm not an economic expert. Tell me what you think of Bill's post

I would have to believe that one segment of savings if you want to call it that often overlooked are the appreciative assets purchased by the new wealth. Many baby boomers rather than SAVE have purchased billions and billions of dollars of payed up Real Estate, Airplanes, Boats, Remodeled Homes, Second Homes etc. that would provide ready cash should it be needed, they are just not enthralled with CD's and such.
