I don't think that's Derby distance Pedigree, but believe it or not my pedigree books are at my father's house. I guess pop may get a surprise visit.

There's no way to avoid if you can't find a soft spot. Some of the best trainers simply accept the potential of defeat and send out a short horse. I actually think that's the best way to go about it. You send the horse out very fit but not sharp. If he's tons the best you win anyway. If you run into a tiger or a tough field you finish 3rd or in the middle of the back etc.. Then you build from there and peak in the 3rd or 4th race after the layoff.
