You may now connect a video camera to the internet and monitor children, hospitalized people, prisoners, house arrestees etc. remotely and record it permanently. It is very cheap. Just as patients' vital signs are monitored from the nursing station, they can be monitored remotely. Caring friends and relatives insist on access to this kind of monitoring.

I am sure that the degree of family involvement does make a difference. My own family's intense involvement must have been noted. Also financial rewards probably do help, although I was struck by the nurse's refusal of money to compensate her for the extra time she spend with my uncle and by the refusal of money by the most regular aide when my mother was dying. Instead the aide asked for one of my mother's plants as a remembrance.
