They already HAVE moved on- they grieve over a multitude of things- and people will ALWAYS do that. Symbolism has always been a minefield- in any age. I am sure you can think of as many, or more, examples of this as I can.

Now, the Southern flag with it's Southern historical connotations has a pretty limited meaning (imo). That doesn't mean I am not on your "side" but I think your position is a good deal more ambiguous - again- just my opinion- than the position regarding the Swastika.

I think you confused what I was saying as some sort of attack on your position- which it was not. I don't feel history or the symbols of history- whether good or bad- should be expunged out of some sort of delicacy of feeling for people in the present. I was merely explaining that hierarchically speaking - in my hierarchy of course- the Southern flag is of relatively little global importance. You will attach whatever significance you want to it- but on a human MASS basis, there were a lot more people using the Swastika for purely benign reasons than there were using the Southern flag. Of course you don't seem to care at all about the Swastika, as you have said, so this is clearly more than an intellectual discussion for you, you have an emotional connection to this issue. I don't have much of an emotional connection to any symbols so I rate them based on the pure mass of humans who have found them appealing and what those humans have done with those symbols. It is also important to me how old the symbol is and how complex. Not that any of this matters to anyone but me.
