>>Sun is just about giving away Solaris 8. Users will have to pay only $75 for a start-up kit. By comparison, Sun's Solaris 7 costs about $700.

It might seem that Sun is forgoing a lot of revenue, but the company will make up any shortfall by selling more technical support and service to users of Solaris, says Anil Gadre, vice president and general manager of Solaris at Sun.

"We're raising the bar in the operating systems category," Gadre said. "We believe we're leading the industry into a service-oriented model for operating systems."

That's a pretty steep price drop. I hope they make some inroads ... having a 'virtual' monopoly in MSFT has only meant one thing -- an interface designed to keep others out.

MSFT had the opportunity to design a more open OS and plenty of capability -- I giggle at their foolishness -- it is the same mistake that Apple made. That should be enough to get me several flames --

Better go ...

taxman: Solaris 8 is missing the target if that is their aim. Worse they would be aiming at the wrong target. In fact they are not aiming at MSFT but at Linux. MSFT has too many legacy customers that won't be dislodged by a Solaris give away. You think after waiting all these months NT customers aren't content to wait a few weeks for a system that has received great reviews. On the other hand getting out ahead of the Linux (subset of Unix) charge might be worth "giving away" Solaris 8. JFD
