Interesting Press Release - I like the integration with Sun hardware, StarOffice and I-Planet. Looks like Sun's vision is paying off since they got into the ASP space 2 years ago before anyone knew what it was and are providing the value added software components as well now.

Nortel Networks to Enable EINSTEINet to Launch Germany's First ASP
New Operator Selects End-to-End Solution from Nortel Networks And Nortel DASA in Deal Estimated at US$200 Million
DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Nortel Networks (NYSE, Toronto: NT - news news) and Nortel DASA have been selected as the solutions integrator for EINSTEINet, Germany's first facilities-based application service provider (ASP). The Nortel Networks solution for EINSTEINet will include high-speed Internet access, Optical Internet, Internet Data Center infrastructure, and application software and service capabilities. The deal is expected to be worth US$200 million over three years. The launch of EINSTEINet, Nortel Networks' first major ASP customer, is being announced at a joint EINSTEINet-Nortel Networks press conference today at the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

EINSTEINet plans to provide high-performance application software services over its secure network, giving small and medium-sized businesses throughout Germany new competitive advantages, according to a news release by EINSTEINet also published today. EINSTEINet founder and chairman Martin Varsavsky said that EINSTEINet has moved from a plan on a piece of paper to launch stage in 12 months, thanks to the end-to-end support of Nortel Networks. ``Without Nortel Networks' vision of the ASP market and high-performance Internet capabilities, EINSTEINet would still be on the drawing board. Through this relationship, we will be able to build out a solution which extends to the customer premise to offer unrivaled service to our target customer base of 300,000 small and medium businesses,' Varsavsky said.

Nortel Networks is taking a leadership position in developing a complete solution for ASPs as a key element in its vision of the high-performance Internet as a service enabling network. Application Service Providers enable corporations of all sizes to make use of innovative software application suites such as e-mail, eCommerce and desktop productivity applications which are delivered across the high-performance Internet and billed on a usage basis. Analysts project that the ASP market will be worth US$20 billion in annual revenue by 2003.

``This end-to-end solution demonstrates Nortel Networks' unrivaled ability to rapidly enable a complete, turnkey ASP business model to help our customers capture first mover advantage in this emerging market,' said Richard Caruso, president, ASP Market Segment, Nortel Networks. ``EINSTEINet will demonstrate Nortel Networks' ability to offer a complete Internet Data Center. Our ability to leverage our own world-class solutions and integrate best-in-class solutions from other technology leaders was critical to developing this groundbreaking, end-to-end ASP solution.'

Unveiled at Davos

EINSTEINet is Argentine-born Varsavsky's fifth start-up. His two previous start-ups, Viatel and Jazztel, were also built with the support of Nortel Networks. Nortel Networks has supplied Viatel's pan-European network with its market leading Optical Internet and switching solutions since 1997. Jazztel, based on Nortel Networks Optical Internet and high-speed Internet access solutions, has announced that it has 165,000 Internet subscribers in Spain, and launched service in Portugal at the start of this year. With EINSTEINet, both Varsavsky and Nortel Networks are taking the Internet into new, more advanced realms.

Josef Ellmauer, chief executive officer, Nortel DASA, said, ``Our turnkey offer for EINSTEINet represents how Nortel DASA is playing a major role in bringing the high-performance Internet to Germany. Nortel Networks is working closely with Martin on this cutting-edge Internet business, which opens the door to new services for European service providers and promises enormous benefits for their customers.'

Internet Data Centers

EINSTEINet will be Nortel Networks' first design and delivery of a complete Internet Data Center solution. Internet Data Centers house the eBusiness content that is fueling the Internet economy and are key components of the high-performance Internet. Nortel Networks and Nortel DASA are serving as the prime solutions integrator, developing and implementing the business and service plan, designing and building Internet Data Centers, selecting and implementing application solutions, and providing systems integration. Nortel DASA Network Systems is a joint venture between Nortel Networks and DaimlerChrysler Aerospace. Nortel Networks is working with key technology leaders including Sun Microsystems, which will provide key computing infrastructure and professional services for EINSTEINet's data centers. Nortel Networks will initially manage technical operation of the network until EINSTEINet has fully developed its services organization.

EINSTEINet's applications suite will be based on messaging, calendaring and web hosting applications from iPlanet, a Sun-Netscape alliance; the StarOffice suite of office productivity applications from Sun Microsystems; Nortel Networks' Managed eCommerce solution announced in December 1999; and other applications including Unified Messaging. In addition to Optical Internet infrastructure, Nortel Networks will supply software solutions to EINSTEINet, including service provisioning, network management and operational control systems via the Nortel Networks Preside portfolio. The Preside portfolio enables a service provider to offer guaranteed quality of service and security, key features for a reliable, high-performance Internet for businesses.

Varsavsky and Nortel Networks chose the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos as the place to unveil EINSTEINet to mark the significance of this new business, which aims to bring revolutionary new capabilities to the Internet, turning many business functions that are today mainframe-centric or PC-centric into functions that will be Internet-centric. The Davos meeting brings together 2,500 world leaders including this year U.S. President Bill Clinton and U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair. Varsavsky has been named a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum, in recognition of his role as one of the world's leading Internet entrepreneurs under the age of 40. Nortel Networks is supplying a high-performance network to keep Davos's high-powered guests constantly connected.
