Meetings between Qualcomm executives and officials of China United Telecommunications Corp., China's second biggest telephone company, began Thursday and stretched into the weekend, the newspaper reported. San Diego-based Qualcomm, which holds many patents for mobile-phone technology in the United States, is hoping to secure a deal that would expand China's huge mobile-phone market and would ensure its products remain dominant, the Journal said. China, a hotspot for the mobile telecommunication market, had 43 million mobile-phone users last year, the Journal reported. That number is expected to reach 70 million this year, the paper said. The talks pit CMDA wireless technology, widely used in the United States, against the European GSM wireless technology that is currently the nearly exclusive technology in China, the Journal reported. Last year, Chinese negotiators, under pressure from Washington, agreed to launch a CMDA mobile network, which would create more business opportunities for U.S. companies. But the network has yet to be built because the Chinese ministry that oversees telecommunications could not reach an agreement with Qualcomm, which invented most CDMA technology. After months of fruitless negotiations, the Chinese government withdrew from talks in December and allowed China United to strike a deal.
