SAN RAMON, Calif., Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Wireless Corporation (Nasdaq: USWC; Frankfurt: USP), a provider of wireless location information, today announced a contract from the Maryland State Highway Administration and the Federal Highway Administration to provide location-enhanced traffic information services in the Washington, D.C. metro area, including Maryland and Virginia.

U.S. Wireless will deploy its award-winning RadioCamera(TM) system in a pilot program to improve traffic conditions for the area's highway system. U.S. Wireless' network will provide the Maryland State Highway Administration with accurate real-time analysis of traffic speed and congestion, which will be used for traffic management and planning.

``After investigating numerous possible solutions for Traffic Management and Intelligent Transportation Systems, we found U.S. Wireless' approach to be the most innovative and economical,' said Dr. David Lovell, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, and an advisor to the Maryland State Highway Administration. ``We are looking forward to the pilot deployment and are designing a comprehensive testing regimen to further assist us in defining this product in an ITS context. We anticipate a wide range of benefits from the fully functional system.'

The application of localized traffic information and data collection to the transportation arena represents a pivotal development for the ITS industry. The RadioCamera(TM) system cost-effectively enables a variety of intelligent transportation services including traffic monitoring, location-sensitive traveler updates and alerts, and statistical and real-time 'best route' information.

Consumers and businesses in and around the southern portion of the Washington, D.C. Beltway are expected to be the first to benefit from improvements in traffic planning and management, including balanced traffic and alleviated congestion on local roads and arteries.

``Real-time traffic and traveler information is expected to drive a new generation of mobility content services not only for the public safety, wireless, and ITS industries, but for the Internet and broadcast marketplace as well,' said Uday Nagendran, Director of Intelligent Transportation Systems for U.S. Wireless.``

U.S. Wireless Corporation's ITS services are part of a larger platform of mobile information services. The RadioCamera(TM) system provides wireless carriers with information to meet the FCC's mandate for Enhanced 911 caller location (``E-911'). Carriers, Internet portals and others will use the company's information to deliver value-added content services including localized directory assistance, roadside and navigational assistance, personal safety, asset tracking and fleet management. U.S. Wireless plans to build and operate a nationwide service bureau of location networks in 100 markets across the United States, beginning with the Washington, D.C./Baltimore metro area.

U.S. Wireless Enters Washington-Baltimore Area With Mobile Data Network For Location Services
National Network Offers Wireless Carriers E-911 & Next Generation Information Services
SAN RAMON, Calif., Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Wireless Corporation (Nasdaq: USWC; Frankfurt: USP) today announced a bold entry into the wireless data market with its nationwide Wireless Location Network. U.S. Wireless' announcement establishes the Washington, D.C.-Baltimore metro market as the first major section of its national network to provide wireless carriers with real-time data to meet the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) mandate for Enhanced 911 (E-911) caller location. The network also gives wireless carriers, Internet portals, broadcast media and others the ability to offer individuals and businesses powerful next generation services such as navigational and roadside assistance, traffic updates, personal location services, asset and vehicle tracking and network management services.

The company is poised to deliver its system to an estimated $4 billion-a-year market for location-based information services. U.S. Wireless will deploy its network in the nation's top 100 markets, beginning with the Washington, D.C.-Baltimore area, which encompasses nearly seven million people.

``As the Internet and wireless technologies converge, users will increasingly demand more sophisticated and personalized services. By enabling subscribers to instantly access information that has been enhanced by location, we're unlocking the door to countless new mobile services and applications,' said Dr. Oliver Hilsenrath, President & CEO of U.S. Wireless Corporation.

The U.S. Wireless network represents a pivotal development in the wireless industry's efforts to provide E-911 caller location information to the public safety community. For wireless carriers, the network enables rapid implementation of the FCC mandate's requirements without the need for costly infrastructure investments. Multiple carriers in any U.S. Wireless market will be able to participate in the economic and operational efficiencies of a shared independent network platform. The network can provide universal coverage, and does not rely on the replacement or modification of handsets.

``Our network will provide wireless carriers with instant and reliable caller location information, enabling public safety agencies to rapidly respond to all individuals in need of assistance,' added Hilsenrath.

The U.S. Wireless network also provides valuable solutions for Intelligent Transportation Services (ITS). In a separate announcement today, the company said that it had received a contract from the Maryland State Highway Administration and the Federal Highway Administration to provide localized traffic information services for ITS applications. U.S. Wireless will provide the Maryland State Highway Administration with accurate real-time analysis of traffic speed and congestion, which will be used to enhance traffic management and planning in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

The U.S. Wireless network is based on the company's award-winning RadioCamera(TM) system, which provides instant and accurate location data to wireless carriers and others that wish to offer personalized or localized information services. The RadioCamera(TM) system excels in densely populated urban environments, and is compatible with all network standards and protocols, including AMPS, CDMA, TDMA, iDEN and GSM.
