Legend Licenses CIC's Chinese Handwriter Input Method for New Wireless Devices for the Chinese Market

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 31, 2000--(Nasdaq: CICI)--Communication Intelligence Corporation ("CIC") today announced that it has formed a strategic alliance with Legend Consumer Electronics Company ("Legend") a subsidiary of Legend Holdings Ltd. (HKG: 0992.HK), the largest computer and information technology supplier in China, to develop and deploy pen-based applications for handheld devices. As part of the new alliance, Legend has signed a licensing agreement to bundle CIC's Chinese Handwriter(R) on Legend's new Windows CE(R) based Palm-size PC. Announced in September of 1998 by Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Legend, the Tianquan 3000 Palm-Size PC from Legend is expected to begin shipping this quarter and will be sold in China.

The Chinese Handwriter was developed by CIC and its 90% owned Chinese joint venture, Communication Intelligence Computer Corporation Ltd. ("CICC"). CICC introduced the Chinese Handwriter for the Desktop market over two years ago and recently introduced its Chinese Handwriter for Windows CE specifically designed for Palm-size PC users. The product enables the user to write on the full screen and does not require an input panel area thus maximizing the viewable screen space for other applications. CICC is the first to introduce a handwritten PinYin input method; the most frequently used input method for Chinese computer users.

"This strategic alliance with Legend is confirmation of the success of CIC's Chinese Handwriter product," said Guido DiGregorio, CEO and President of CIC and CICC, "As a result of years of research and development the Chinese Handwriter is superior in recognition accuracy and usability as compared to similar products in the Chinese market. By combining three of the most frequently used input methods into one product, handwritten Chinese character recognition, handwritten PinYin, and Roman character recognition, the Chinese Handwriter for Palm-size PCs gives the user the power to conveniently enter any Chinese characters."

"We are pleased to work with CICC, the leading pen-based software vendor, as our strategic partner," said Bin Li, Deputy General Manager of Legend Consumer Electronics Company, "Legend believes that the consumer electronics products will have a huge market in the next few years, and we are confident that we can capture a significant market share and offer the best products to our customers. By bundling CICC's Chinese Handwriter, we are fulfilling our commitment to our customers by offering them the best solutions available."
