Prophet,

Some people have suggested addition of wireless standards such as Blue Tooth to new Consumer Electronic devices. This will accomplish what you have proposed. This will ONLY obviate the need for annoying cables (USB, parallel Port etc.).
You will always need local storage (i.e. Compact Flash). Aus may enlighten us more on this area since he uses servers for posting his Digital Images. I don't think he plans to get rid of his CFs.

It is similar to PC world. We have a lot more connectivity devices(USB,LAN,Wireless R, IR etc.)on our PC. But the need for local storage is increasing.

Cheers,

Derek
