Review of SAFtyLatch for voice, from the January 31 Canberra Times: "More Austin Powers Than James Bond "Product: SAFtyLatch. Developer: Saflink. Platform: Windows 95/98, 16M RAM, 5M space, CD ROM, Soundblaster-compatible sound card. Price: $149.95. " . . . if one Bond (Sean Connery, the man with one of the world's most-imitated voices) was to get this gadget from Q, he would be in trouble. "Unfortunately, if you follow the instructions, the hardest thing to break into on it is the shrink wrap. "In trying this software, my flatmate was able to log on as me not only once, but three times in a row. We thought that was enough testing. "Although, admittedly if you do not follow the instructions and say something other than 'My voice is my password,' then you have a much better chance of safely locking away your files. Of course, someone else can still get in, but they need to know your password. "But perhaps that goes back to the 'military-grade encryption.' "The armed forces know that if we go to war, chances are it will be against some foreign-language-speaking country, so they wouldn't need to worry about someone imitating a voice. "Or perhaps there's something we are not being told, and we are about to be invaded by a nation bereft of speech. "Although SAFtyLatch advertises that it is good for the office computer and work laptop as well as the home computer, realistically there are very few people who would relish the opportunity to say in a loud clear voice "My voice is my password" into a microphone while surrounded by friends, colleagues and clients. "Especially when setting it up. It took about five tries before it accepted my voice pattern apparently I spoke too softly or I gave a garbled sample. . . "The developers say the software which comes with a microphone is good for business executives protecting their files from corporate spies, those travelling with laptops, parents who want to protect data from their children and friends, and students who share a PC or network. All very honourable intentions. "Of course, we all know what this software is really going to be used for: porn. "SAFtyLatch is for those people who are concerned that their parents or spouses will find their collection of downloaded eye candy. "In days gone by, pubescent teenagers would hide their copies of Playboy, Penthouse, or whatever porn they chose to peruse (for the articles, of course), under the bed or in some other secret hiding place in their rooms. "Not today's modern computer-literate teens. "A quick spot of web surfing and they can download the smut of their choice, and with SAFtyLatch they no longer need to worry about Mum stumbling across it on their PC. "Unless her voice sounds like theirs." =============== Did you guys enjoy that review as much as I did? How many licenses do you think ESAF is going to sell to the corporate market for its voice application?
