CHEAPSKATE ALERT!! - THis one isn't an online deal, but cheapskates should definitely take advantage. Micro Center (a computer department store with several locations throughout the US) (MB - including Houston) is offering a $400 rebate on any purchase over $400 (net of returns and sales tax). The rules are you need to sign up for an E-Trade account, deposit a minimum of $1000 and keep the account open for at least a year (the $400 will be credited to your E-Trade account in ~6 weeks). The catch is I don't know if this deal is going on at all Micro Centers (but it is at my local store in Santa Clara, CA). Also the offer is only good through today (1/31/00, with the E-trade application postmarked by 2/15/00); but through next month you can still get a $300 refund. The limit is one refund per houshold, but if you pay cash there is no name on the receipt and you can set up additional accounts for your relatives.

This morning, the store was packed with people trying to take advantage of this offer - so some popular items (like most monitors) were out of stock. However they said you can buy something now and exchange it for something else within 30 days - to take advantage of the refund offer.

I don't know if they take orders over the phone, but I suspect they will. I just bought a monitor plus several zip disks for $409 and I was able to ship it from the store to my mother in Oregon (thus avoiding sales tax). Moreover, there was a $50 manufacturers rebate on the monitor - surprisingly, they said it was OK to get both the rebate and $400 refund!!! The addresses of various micro center outlets is at microcenter.com
