Monday January 31, 6:30 pm Eastern Time RESEARCH ALERT - JDS Uniphase started at hold CHICAGO, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Edward Jones analyst David Powers said Monday he initiated coverage of fiber-optic component supplier JDS Uniphase Corp. (NasdaqNM:JDSU - news) with a hold rating. -- said the explosive growth in Internet traffic is increasing the amount of data traffic on today's communications network. -- said many service providers are upgrading their networks with new fiber-optic technology because the copper wires that had been used to build network foundations cannot support the amount of data sent. -- said this demand is driving the need for fiber-optic equipment by many JDS Uniphase customers. -- said JDS Uniphase has one of the broadest and deepest optical portfolios in the industry. -- said ''We believe JDS Uniphase will continue to make acquisitions to expand its product line and increase manufacturing capacity. While we believe this is a good strategy, it also carries a number of risks.'' -- said he believes the high valuation on JDS Uniphase's stock is a little excessive and already discounts a good portion of the company's potential. --Shares of JDS Uniphase rose 4-1/16 at 199-15/16 on Nasdaq in afternoon trade.
