Well, the auto and PC are competely different. You can drive your 1990's Honda well on today's highway, no problem at all. For PC, as the CPU getting faster and faster, and memory requirement getting larger and larger, you 10 years old PC from 1990 may not be able to run most of today's sfoware program , so you need to continue upgrade. Pretty soon when the stream video compression technology comes to play , i.e video on demand, real time video broadcast through the internet, you will need more powerful PCs, and this will keep people upgrade their pcs. Besides, you will see more and more application on PCs come to play in the near future, and all these need powerful and modern PCs.

Dear Mr Trolson:

All you gloom and doomers want to do these on your cellphone:

1 prepare your tax return
2 write these responses, or a nice letter to mom
3 play MSFT flight simulator
4 pay bills, print checks, analyze accounts receivable, payables
5 watch a movie
6 surf the net on a 3" screen

You gotta be kidding!

The demise of the PC is premature.

Andy Grove said it's all for the eyes or something to that effect.
I'm going to Best Buy today to replace my 17" monitor for 21",
because it's all for the eyes. Ears aren't too bad either. I think I'll upgrade the sound system too. How's the sound quality on your portable? By the way, why should ever buy more than one (1) portable cellphone?
