MTNL profits up 7%, sales down 7%

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd made a net profit of Rs3.64bn in the third quarter of
FY2000, up from Rs3.41bn in the same period a year earlier, its chairman and managing
director said today.

Srinivas Rajagopalan told reporters the firm's net sales in the October-December quarter
were Rs12.18bn compared to Rs13.06bn in the same period a year earlier.

He said the impact of tariff re-balancing which started in May 1999 was beginning to wane
and the number of metered calls was increasing and that these trends were likely to help
MTNL's earnings in the fourth quarter. "The top line still has to pick up, it might happen in the
fourth quarter," Rajagopalan told reporters after a board meeting.

A company said metered call units rose by around 8% in Mumbai and 1% in Delhi in
November-December.

The firm also said it saw a massive surge in new telephone connections in both Mumbai and
Delhi and this was also likely to help lift its earnings in the last quarter of the business year.
Nearly 4mn people subscribe to MTNL's fixed-line phone service and over 20,000 use its
Internet service.

Asked whether he saw the whole-year financial performance matching the previous year's,
Rajagopalan said: "Yes, with this trend, yes." In 1998/99 MTNL's net profit was Rs13.17bn
on income from services of Rs52.47bn.

Asked about MTNL's plans to list on the New York Stock Exchange, Rajagopalan said the
firm's board of directors had earlier in the day approved the listing. It also approved ICICI Ltd
as advisor for the listing.

"We want to list by March 15," he said.

India's Software Market Seen At $8.85 Bln By End Mar 2001

BOMBAY (Dow Jones)--The National Association of Software and Services Cos. said Tuesday that the Indian information technology software and services market is expected to grow to $8.85 billion in the year ending March 31, 2001.

This will consist of $6.32 billion in software exports and $2.53 billion in revenues from the domestic market.

The software industry is projected to earn $5.7 billion in the current year ending March 31, which is a growth of approximately 50% over the previous figure of $3.9 billion, Dewang Mehta, president of the National Association of Software said at a press conference.

"We expect the first international gateway for private Internet service providers to be operational by June 2000, which will result in a dramatic increase in Internet usage and connectivity in the country," Mehta said.

According to the association's survey, Internet connections are projected to go up to 1.4 million from the current 610,000 connections, and Internet users are expected to increase to five million by March 31, 2001, from the current 2.1 million.

Separately, Desh Deshpande, chairman and founder of Sycamore Networks Inc. said that he plans to enter the Indian software business via either a joint venture or selling of the software product technology to Indian businesses in the year 2000.

Deshpande said that the Sycamore technology can provide the backbone for selling bandwidth for Indian e-commerce trade, research and development, professional services including offering design networks and software talent. -0- 01/02/00 13-35G
