Steve, all I know is that for Intel, all Slot 1 processors will move to FC-PGA 370 "Socketmine" (my personal nickname for those socketed Coppermines) before the end of 2000. Right now, the only FC-PGA motherboards out there are based on the 810e chipset, which isn't meant for SMP. I'm sure once 820 and 840-based motherboards start moving to FC-PGA, Intel will enable Socketmines for SMP.

I don't know about Slot 2 Xeons, though. I would think that once Cascades is released (Coppermine w/ 2MB on-die cache), Intel would have a prime opportunity to ditch that ugly Xeon cartridge once and for all. Heck, even the Merced cartridge is more compact than the Slot 2 Xeon package. But moving Slot 2 to some sort of "socket 2" seems like too much work for too little of a return.
