shoe: One of the fun parts of the DoCoMo story is that there is zero repeat zero GSM in Japan at present. Japan uses its own systems with the exception of CDMA One which was introduced to compete with DoCoMo last spring.

DoCoMo however has a deep desire to be a member of the European "club" apparently and obtain access to the huge installed worldwide network of GSM outside of Japan.

A fascinating case for study.

The joke of course is that the WCDMA that DoCoMo plans to introduce a year from now is similar (64k) to that which its rival CDMA One launched this Jan 7.

DoCoMo is one year behind the Qualcomm system already and its system will be non standard to boot.

The chances are that DoCoMo will cave as Ericsson did. But perhaps not. Pride is an amazingly strong counterbalance to economic interest and common sense.

Best.

Shoe - Just guessing here but DoCoMo seems very friendly with Ericsson. It could simply be that much of their existing equipment was ERICY equipment and they see working with Ericsson as a way of guaranteeing compatibility.
