Qualcomm nears digital
mobile deal

BLOOMBERG in Beijing

Qualcomm, a United States developer of the
fastest-growing digital mobile phone standard, is "very
close" to a pact that could mark the first widespread use
of its Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA)
technology in the mainland.

Qualcomm senior vice-president Louis Lupin made
progress during talks last week with China United
Telecommunications, the nation's second-largest phone
company, on building CDMA networks in the mainland,
said Leo Zhang, general manager for China.

The Asian Wall Street Journal earlier quoted Mr Lupin
as saying "good progress" was made in the negotiations.

Mr Zhang said the agreement might be delayed until
after the Lunar New Year holiday.

"It's a package deal involving technology transfer and
agreements on intellectual property rights," Mr Zhang
said.
