Elmer Re <<Remember when Merced taped out? The Register called it and Intel publicly boasted about it. Have I missed something? I haven't seen a word about Willamette. With all the pressure from Athlon don't you think we'd hear about it if Willamette taped out?>>

I think you believe that Willamette has not taped out. If so do you think Intel can meet the Q4 target for the product launch? Also, does Willamette require a whole new infrastructure with regard to chipsets and MB's?

Seems I read the Willamettee taped out a couple weeks ago...
Now where did I see that?

It is possible that during 6+ years on the drawing board, the design tools got so out of whack with the design itself that Intel can't validate Willy without building silicon. That would explain why there are rumors about silicon and yet, no "official" tape-out chest pounding.

Elmer, re:<With all the pressure from Athlon don't you think we'd hear about it if Willamette taped out?>
Not necessarily. Did the Register cover CuMine tapeout? Merced is in a different cost/price/performance class from Athlon so bragging about it gives positive publicity without any negative competive info leak.

Not so for Willy. I expect Intel to play its cards very close to its vest.
