So now we know. The target for "direct" PC sales is back 40% (not 50% or 60%) and is now for 4th quarter (not "after June" "by September" or "in 3Q"). Stay tuned!

Michael Capellas is the CEO of Compaq.

He says that direct corporate pc sales will total 40% of total sales by the 4th quarter.

An ambitious plan, yes, but the market has clearly spoken and they are responding.

U.S., Latin America, and Japan are all in good shape; next step is establishing the balance in Europe.

It is now a hybrid market with the large companies going direct.

CPQ has simplified the entire product line.

Capellas is targeting profitability in the business pc division in the second half.

When asked if Compaq is a takeover target, Capellas replied that he cannot comment, and that he is going after the business of a healthy business.

Capellas' "no comment" did seem pretty strange... I can't see any possible synergy between CPQ and HWP - they have hugely overlapping product lines - but who knows? At the time that Rosen was closing on the DEO replacement, Carly was one of the possibilities mentioned, and Capellas was COO at that time - rumor was that Capellas and Carly go along pretty well, although she obviously did not take the job.

Maybe there is some other deal in process - different than a merger or takeover but still substantial... I am mystified...
