herringbone 100: I studiously avoid ever buying the banks and financial stocks because they are not masters of their own fate. They are hypersensitive to interest rate concerns and world economic problems (remember how they tanked in Fall 1998 when Russia defaulted and Brazil's economy collapsed?). In short, their behavior in the stock market is not a reflection of the soundness of their underlying business and profits. I don't care how cheap they are or what their P/E's are, I avoid them. Their risk/reward ratio is quite poor. Additionally, with the specter of two or three interest rate hikes AFTER the one coming on Feb. 2, buying into this sector is financial suicide. Caveat emptor.
