If true, this could create a huge window of opportunity for Sun as Intel would have wasted years of work and tens of millions of R&D. From the Register (which has an anti-Intel bias):...

I don't share your interpretation. If true, this actually would increase rather than decrease the threat to Sun. It just means that Intel faces up to reality and throws away the non-working first iteration of IA64. They didn't waste anything...most Merced R&D applies equally to McKinley, not counting FAB setup. (Isn't McKinley just Merced taking advantage of a smaller process? They may have changed the layout but the basic processor and compiler design is still the same, no?)

So Sun should be watching this development carefully, because Intel having a 1GHz 64-bit processor on the street is worth a lot of press and bragging rights. Fortunately, if that article is true it meanst the gap between the time IA64 is on the market and the time M$FT supports it will increase; and IA64 Linux in 2001 is something I'm oh-so-unworried about.

Thank God for Microsoft.
