Elmer & Intel Investors - The following software product may have a significant effect on Intel's Communications efforts in the future.

"Wind River's architecture for supporting the development of Internet infrastructure devices is synergistic with the Intel Internet Exchange(TM) (IX) Architecture and fits Intel's vision of how networks will be built in the future. Equipment vendors can take advantage of programmable silicon along with highly integrated software packages like Tornado for Managed Switches to accelerate time to market for next generation networking equipment," said Len Rand, general manager of Intel's Internet Exchange Architecture Operation. "With the level of integration it can offer, Wind River is extremely well positioned to help enable a new generation of software-programmable networking devices."

Wind River Ships Tornado for Managed Switches, Targets Network Infrastructure, Internetworking Equipment Vendors

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 31, 2000--Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for smart devices in the Internet age, today announced general availability of Tornado(TM) for Managed Switches (TMS), the company's first integrated product for internetworking equipment vendors.

The company also stated that TMS is the first product available as part of an overall strategy to provide integrated development platforms for vendors of Small Office/Home Office (SOHO), enterprise, and carrier class infrastructure equipment. (See addendum with TMS support quotes from customers and partners.)

"TMS represents the first milestone on our roadmap for commoditizing the common components found in network infrastructure devices," said David Fraser, vice president and general manager of Wind River's networking business unit. "Customers have a very versatile and powerful product in TMS, both in terms of what it does as a stand-alone product and in terms of its value as the foundation for complementary technology.

"A standard platform such as TMS provides a significant jumpstart for vendors looking to develop leading-edge products. A highly-integrated product also appeals to lower-tier players who build commodity products."

TMS has already been licensed by over 20 companies including Ardent Technologies, BATM Advanced Communications, Cerent, Force10 Networks, I-Cube, ODS Networks, and Richard HIRSCHMANN GmbH & Co. Applications include Ethernet switches, cable modem termination systems, and a carrier-class aggregation switch.

In addition, Wind River is working with leading network and packet processing vendors to provide support for TMS. Vendors working on driver support include Allayer Technologies Corp., Broadcom, Intel, MMC Networks, and Music Semiconductors.

The tremendous growth of the Internet is putting increased pressure on equipment vendors. Manufacturers are being pushed to introduce new, higher-performing, lower-cost products more quickly than ever before.

Until now, vendors have faced significant challenges in pulling together solutions from disparate, often incompatible, sources. A real-time operating system (RTOS) may come from one supplier, management software from another, and protocol stacks and drivers from still other sources.

By combining off-the-shelf network processors with infrastructure application products such as TMS, networking equipment vendors can more easily and quickly develop leading-edge Internet equipment. The TMS platform incorporates the powerful Tornado embedded application development platform, the industry-leading VxWorks(R) RTOS, and the common set of protocol and management components required for enterprise-class routing and switch-based devices.

In addition, TMS can easily be extended to address a variety of network device types and to provide more complete network application solutions.

"No other commercial software vendor has as well integrated an offering as Wind River," said Jerry Fiddler, co-founder and chairman of Wind River Systems. "And by supplying a higher percentage of the end solution, the integration effort for the customer is vastly reduced.

"Being able to focus on powerful and highly targeted solutions was one of the key company goals when we first created business units. The additional engineering talent that the merger with ISI will bring to these efforts will only accelerate our ability to meet the needs of specialized markets like networking."

With infrastructure application products such as TMS, Wind River will be able to provide scalable, highly integrated products targeted at the enterprise, carrier, and SOHO market segments. Initial target applications include switches, routers, VPN servers, firewalls, and home gateways.

Tornado for Managed Switches

Wind River System's Tornado for Managed Switches is a complete embedded software solution for building manageable enterprise-class data networking switch and router equipment. With TMS, manufacturers now have all the ingredients necessary to quickly build Ethernet switches, routers, and other leading-edge data networking products.

TMS version 1.0 is a complete Layer 2 management and switching software solution for desktop- and wiring-closet-class Ethernet switches. Support for Spanning Tree, VLAN, and Priority Queuing is provided. TMS includes complete management capability with support for console via Telnet or serial, SNMP, and web-based management.

The unique TMS architecture ensures consistent views of the management information regardless of which method is used. Source code to all drivers, protocols, and management sample screens is provided for easy customization and extension.

Pricing and Availability

TMS is offered in two separate packages, each tailored for a different class of data networking equipment:

-- Basic Layer 2 Switch Package: software components for low-cost
desktop and workgroup Ethernet switches

-- Extended Layer 2 Switch Package: software components for more
sophisticated wiring closet and backbone Ethernet switches

Upcoming enhancements include the integration of the software components for enterprise-class Layer 3 switches and routers. Each package is provided in source-code format and will run out-of-the-box with the Tornado development environment, enabling developers to radically shorten the design process.

OT, trades/Mary: as I wrote (#reply-12735823), I posted as an update to let the thread know where I stood. Consider the trade opened and closed/rolled at the times of the two posts (#reply-12576606 #reply-12733998). As for Mary's little unkindness (#reply-12738722), I can't figure what set her off. Browsing my recent posts, I see a discussion of demand and supply constraint, some arguments about options expense, the spat about IABG revenue/profit/segment definition, a few mocking posts (of Paul & Windsock), a discussion of W2K, and a few 'defense' posts (#reply-12576793, #reply-12576440). Speaking of which, I had earlier defended Mary (#reply-12642507) on another thread; how unfortunate that she snapped at me so soon thereafter. Thanks for the advice; I try to make enough of a post record that I can make reference without appearing overbearing. Cheers, -mb
