There is a strong connotation of "Rebel" with the flag. And most of the kids I know in the South think of it that way. They're Rebels, wild and free. And that part of it, I take to heart. I think of myself as a Southern Rebel, and a Texan (that needs no adjective). I think it sucks that the flag has other meanings. The rebel spirit in this country is important. Not to the point of a battle flag or a civil war, but like Jefferson said... I like a bit of rebellion, too. Keeps us fresh and growing and free. Those kids (and, yeah, there are the white supremists yuks, but I didn't hang with them) think of it as a symbol of defiance against oppression. Against Big Brother.
