Owners of code division multiple access (CDMA) mobile phones can now use their handsets to send data and digital fax from notebook computers, says Australian telco Telstra [AUS:TLS][NYSE:TLS]. And Internet access will follow later this year, it adds. The CDMA network is claimed to transmit data at higher speeds and with more reliability than analog networks. The CDMA network supports circuit-switched asynchronous data and digital fax at speeds of 9600bps and 14,400bps, a Telstra statement says. Qualcomm's QCP 860 CDMA mobile is currently the only suitable equipped handset available through Telstra dealers. But "this is just thebeginning of data-related features on the CDMA network, with plans to introduce wireless application protocol (WAP) and Internet access via the CDMA network later this year," promised Telstra's CDMA product manager Greg Young.
