I keep hearing about EMC using its service offerings as a key differentiator to NTAP in the NAS market.

That strategy is a thorny one. It adds to the cost of the solution and can cause the solution to appear more complex.

NTAP's products are well supported through "support@netapp.com", including automatic status updates generated by the filers sent straight to NetApp. Also, because the filers are so reliable, the NTAP field engineers are able to provide telephone and on-site support as required.

When a filer starts having problems with a disk drive, for example, support@netapp.com is notified and a copy of the report is sent to the field sales engineer. Often the sales engineer will call the customer and say "hey, did you know that drive x on filer y is having transient write errors? I advise you to disable that drive and let the spare kick in."
