The sticky tape was applied to the cloth, and it picked up paint, but there was no paint on the threads. I see.


Sherlock Holmes wouldn't be confused. The paint that was picked up simply wasn't paint from the threads. The shroud hasn't been kept in an airtight container. It could have picked up paint from its containers and display cases the same way that it picked up pollen over the years.
