Some decent testing could put all the controversy to rest.

Another tantalizing bit of history is the St Catherine Monastery papers. Some of the oldest books ever discovered, 2nd or maybe even 1st century... found in some sort of waste bin if I remember. The monks may even have been using scraps as kindling. Archeology wasn't important to them, so it would seem. I think the University of Michigan has managed to get the monastery to let the books be examined.
