Federated Management Architecture Specification Sets the Stage For Distributed, Dynamic Management of Storage Networks

VERITAS, Sun-Led Expert Group Releases FMA Specification Version 1.0

PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced the final release of the Federated Management Architecture (FMA) Specification 1.0, a Java(TM) technology-based component architecture and management services for automated, dynamic network management. The FMA specification provides a standard for communication between applications, services and devices across a heterogeneous network, which will enable developers to easily create solutions for complex distributed environments. The FMA Reference Implementation (RI) source code is freely available for R&D use under the Sun Community Source License (SCSL).

"The FMA Specification sets the stage for advanced, intelligent management of distributed network devices and applications," said Denise Shiffman, vice president of marketing for Sun Network Storage. "Applying this technology to the complex world of storage networks will enable quick development of interoperable management solutions that allow customers to easily manage heterogeneous networks."

The FMA Specification defines a dynamic services model where management services freely interact anywhere on a network. It also defines basic management services such as events, logging, lookup, scheduling and transactions using common programming interfaces.

The FMA RI has passed the specification compatibility test suite (CTS), certifying that it follows the FMA Specification and illustrating that the advanced technology in the specification works. The RI can be downloaded at java.sun.com.

The FMA Specification was created in an open review environment under the Java Community Process(SM) (JCP) program by an expert group made up of storage industry leaders. FMA expert group members include Ancor Communications, Exabyte, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Hitachi LTD. subsidiaries, Legato Systems, Quantum, StorageTek, Sun Microsystems and VERITAS Software.

Concurrent with the arrival of the final FMA Specification, Sun Microsystems today announced immediate availability of the first Jiro(TM) Technology Developer's Release, which is based on the FMA Specification. For further detail, see announcement titled "Jiro Technology Developer's Release Now Available; Development of Dynamic Storage Network Management Solutions Begins."

Jiro(TM) Technology Developer's Release Now Available; Development of Dynamic

Management Software Development Takes a Huge Leap With Industry's First Common

APIs for Distributed and Dynamic Services

PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced the availability of the Jiro(TM) Technology Developer's Release. The Developer's Release source code, which is freely available under the Sun Community Source License (SCSL), enables developers to begin creating interoperable, dynamically distributed and automated storage network management solutions based on industry-defined standards.

"Jiro technology is available today enabling developers to begin creating their interoperable dynamic management services," said Denise Shiffman, vice president of marketing for Sun Network Storage. "Jiro technology-enabled applications will give customers viable solutions for dynamically managing complex, distributed environments such as heterogeneous storage networks."

Jiro technology is the first implementation of the newly released Federated Management Architecture (FMA) Specification, a Java(TM) technology-based component architecture and management services for automated, dynamic network management. The FMA Specification has been developed through an open forum in the Java Community Process(SM) (JCP) program.

The Jiro Technology Developer's Release uses a common set of Java Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for multivendor device and application interoperability. It implements a standard for communication between applications, services and devices across heterogeneous networks, which will enable developers to easily deliver solutions that reduce the complexity and cost of managing networks.

Developers can use Jiro technology to create management applications that solve customer problems of configuring, monitoring, diagnosing and troubleshooting network devices, systems, storage and applications in an intelligent and automated fashion. It defines basic management services such as events, logging, scheduling, transactions and security, as well as dynamic management services for automatic distribution, update and recall of management functions. By leveraging the power and flexibility of the Java programming language, Jiro technology facilitates rapid development cycles, while lowering development costs.

The Jiro Technology Developer's Release includes Jiro source code, binaries, application examples, tutorials and development tools. Developers also have access to on-line community support, technical FAQs, and discussion boards. The Jiro Technology Developer's Release is available for free download at jiro.com.

Many developers have been working with early access and beta Jiro technology code. The Jiro Technology Developer's Release provides an early productized version. Jiro technology-enabled customer solutions are expected to begin emerging by mid 2000. A "Jiro Technology-Enabled" interoperability test program is planned for applications and solutions that incorporate Jiro technology.

Management Software Vendors Eager to Implement Jiro Technology Developer's

Release

The Jiro Technology Developer's Release is generating excitement among management software vendors who are anxious to begin implementing the technology. They now have the first industry-defined standards to serve as the basis for developing open, interoperable, intelligent network-centric solutions. The following statements illustrate what industry leaders are saying about the arrival of Jiro technology.

"Jiro technology will have a significant impact on our ability to provide storage network-based management services," said Brad Rubin, chief technology officer for Imation. "We've already begun incorporating Jiro code into prototype services. Our intent is to be Jiro technology experts providing a range of services such as building Jiro management facades and Jiro technology-enabled components and applications."

"VERITAS Software has been testing early Jiro code in our VERITAS Volume Manager and VERITAS NetBackup product development," said Dr. Guy Bunker, PhD., chief scientist for VERITAS Software. "We're excited about using the Jiro Technology Developer's Release to bring actual Jiro technology-enabled storage management solutions for volume management, storage area network (SAN) management and backup to market quickly."

"We are excited about the arrival of the Jiro Technology Developer's Release and what it will mean to our business," said Ben Preece, lead engineer of Ancor Communications. "Jiro technology will make it possible for Ancor's switches to interoperate with other components on heterogeneous SANs."

"Sun is committed to implementing Jiro technology in all of our storage management and data services," said Raj Das, director of product marketing for Sun Network Storage. "We've incorporated early Jiro code in management applications such as Sun StorEdge(TM) Management Console and Sun StorEdge Component Manager, as well as in Sun StorEdge Instant Image backup and recovery software. This will make it possible for us to quickly deliver compliant, interoperable Jiro technology-enabled solutions."
