B: Compaq Execs Tout Win 2000 Server Products

Feb 01, 2000 (Tech Web - CMP via COMTEX) -- Compaq executives said
Tuesday they are ready and eager to hit to the streets with
Internet-enabled server, storage, and security products that are
maximized for Microsoft's long-awaited Windows 2000 when it formally
launches Feb. 17.

"Compaq has the largest portfolio of products to help customers manage
and support virtually every kind of Windows 2000 environment," said
Mark Lewis, Compaq vice president of enterprise storage software.

Windows 2000, the highly anticipated upgrade to Windows NT 4, is the
biggest product launch for the Redmond, Wash.-based software behemoth
since Windows 95 was designed, tested, and deployed on Compaq products,
Lewis said.

While Microsoft has long partnered with leading computer makers, Compaq
and Microsoft have enjoyed an especially close-knit affiliation,
extending most recently into co-developing, production, and marketing
Windows 2000 products. Compaq is the only computer maker participating
in Microsoft's Win 2000 Rapid Deployment Program and it has widely
deployed the forthcoming operating system internally.

Houston-based Compaq's executives spoke to analysts on a conference
call that coincided with a major print advertising blitz launched
Tuesday by Microsoft in national newspapers. The ads show three green
lights and emphasize 24-by-7 availability of the forthcoming operating
system.

Windows 2000 has greater Internet capabilities and addresses the
reality of more complex storage area networks, Lewis said. Compaq
storage products will leverage Windows 2000 for great business
flexibility, he said.

"We expect Windows 2000 to drive a continued effort toward storage
consolidation," he said. "We've been committed to Microsoft to
co-develop products within the storage environment that maximize
customers' efficiencies."

The formal launch of Windows 2000 will be hosted by Microsoft chairman
Bill Gates and attended by a few thousand industry representatives in
San Francisco will mark a key point for hardware and software makers.

"Compaq has been benchmarking all of our systems and with Windows 2000
in particular we found an improvement of over 40 percent over Windows
NT 4 on our platform today," said Phil Lawson-Shanks, Compaq's manager
Windows 2000 server programs.

Compaq CEO Michael D. Capellas is expected to discuss in detail the new
Windows 2000 and Compaq benchmark results during his keynote at the
Windows 2000 launch event.

On the security products front, Compaq is offering Internet security
products to assist Windows 2000 e-business applications, said Bill
Ferguson, marketing director for Compaq's Atalla security products.
Those products support Microsoft's cryptographic API, the functions of
authenticode, single sign-on, certificate services, secure exchange,
and Internet Information Server.
