LOL! Probably because it costs LU way too much money to maintain odd lot accounts. (These were direct purchases from LU, so a broker is not involved.)

Economy. It's expensive to send dividend checks and reports. Since LU is the most widely owned, it adds up.

The expenses of producing and mailing shareholder information such as dividend checks, annual reports, etc. is an expensive process for LU. LU probably felt they could save $$ if they eliminated X number of shareholders from the total number.
