Of course, it was during the 1980's that major restructuring began, when Washington embraced markets as superior to political direction

Your obsession with the notion that the mood and direction of the American economy and society emanate from Washington is mildly amusing, but grows tiresome. Consider the possibility that it is actually the other way around.

Deregulation started in the Carter Administration with the deregulation of airlines 1977 and trucking. Inflation was beaten by Volker's work as Chairman (nominated by Carter and himself a Democrat.) Reagan's chief contribution was obtaining a tax cut that led the explosion of the national debt and created enormous inflationary pressures that led to Bush and Clinton increasing taxes. The successful throttling fiscal inflation by Clinton and the Congress was the result of fiscal tightening resulting from increased taxes and spending restraints, especially of defense waste.
We are now on the virge of enormous tax cuts to bribe the rich to support George W. Bush.
