Alexander, Funny you should mention those Northern factories. Indeed, another reason the South tried to break away was the fact that there was a speculation crash on Wall Street in 1857 that wiped out a lot of Northerners. The South remained financially stable throughout the crash. They said "look if we didn't have those Wall Street Clowns to worry about just think what we could do with cotton...and how many of those northerners are starving now while our slaves are eating well?" -John
