EMC Corp to Release Windows 2000 Products This Month

Hopkinton, Massachusetts, Feb. 1 (Bloomberg) -- EMC Corp., the No. 1 maker of data-storage devices for computer networks, said its products for Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 2000 operating system will be available when Windows goes on sale on Feb. 17.

The products include servers, storage equipment and services for small- and mid-size businesses from EMC's Data General unit. EMC also will make its top-of-the-line products, which can cost several millions of dollars, for Windows 2000. Servers are used to run computer networks, while storage products hold data such as spreadsheets, e-mail and Web pages.

Microsoft, the world's largest software maker, expects Windows 2000 to increase its share of the market for programs that run business computer networks. The company is trying to line up network hardware companies that will make products compatible with Windows 2000.

The EMC products also will help customers switch to Windows 2000. For example, the storage devices will protect data while customers switch. The two companies said they'll focus in particular on helping hospitals, managed-care facilities and doctors' offices switch to Windows 2000.

EMC is offering what it says is the industry's first guarantee that its servers, from its Data General unit, will be up and running 99.9 percent of the time. To that end, the company provides 24-hour support and will train 400 employees as Microsoft certified developers and engineers in the next year. Both companies have invested an unspecified amount for joint marketing, certification and training.

EMC acquired Data General Corp. in October to move into the market for midrange data-storage products. Data General storage products cost $36,000 to $730,000, the company said.

Hopkinton, Massachusetts-based EMC fell 1 1/2 to 105 in New York Stock Exchange trading. Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft rose 5 1/16 to 102 15/16 in Nasdaq trading.
