The US and Japan are telephonically saturated markets. China is not. However 10 mil does sound like a stretch.

How can Unicom possibly do 10 mil?

Well if they had a network up right NOW....they might be able to do 10m....I think China is supposed to go from 43m subs to 70m next year. Since it seems extremely unlikely that Unicom could have a network up before Sep., I think we need to take that number with a grain of salt.

I really hope that Qualcomm doesnt endorse that number....

DaveMG: Doubt that the Q is expecting that Unicom will have 10 mil customers by the end of this calendar year.

The news is the breakthrough (if the final i's are dotted and t's crossed) - which has yet to happen - and traditionally Chinese (and in fairness other) negotiators have been know to squeeze out the last drop by "temporary" delays.

Not a slam dunk on the entry of CDMA and the Q yet IMO.

So the question of 10 mil customers by what date is secondary.

But, if the agreement is "finalized" - meaning the powers that be in the government give their final approval and all is worked out in detail - then the opportunity is there for multi millions of customers.

The upward slope (and timing along the way) is much less important than getting going in the first place.

(A long winded way to say, you are right, 10 mil customers by the end of Dec 2000 is not at all likely in the real world).

Best.

Dave,

It is not to sign up 10 million subs. It is the capacity to have 10 million subs . China Unicom is going to spend about US $3 billion to build its CDMA networks by the year end (my read from the previous news release - budget wise). They have to be in a hurry to do so.

Per QCOM's release:

"This agreement enables China Unicom to move forward aggressively with plans to deploy a commercial CDMA network with an initial capacity of 10 million subscribers this year, and exponentially grow the network in the next few years, " said Mr. Yang Xianzu, chairman and general manager of China Unicom.
