Craig, All brokerage firms offer short sale rebates to important customers. Unfortunately, I think about $1 million in assets would be the minimum to squeeze it out of them. I get rebates from Merrill and DLJ, but those are kind of courtesy rebates from the days when I paid out $25 million a year in commissions at my own discretion. Those are the two best firms to ask, as they have the largest vaults of stocks.

Among discounters, Ameritrade used to give outstanding rebates when it was still Aufhauser. Though they still claim to pay a rebate, it is so shabby compared to the usual practices that I won't even use them for short sales.

The firms to ask are those who clear through Pershing, a DLJ subsidiary. You are likely to get a no from them, but at least they are able to do it if they are in the mood.
