Bill, according to Dorfman we should sell all out G&K's, beginning with qualcomm:

What would I trim? I would take a careful look at any stock that has doubled in the past 12 months. I would also look hard at any stock selling for more than 50 times earnings, more than 10 times sales, or more than 10 times book value (corporate net worth per share).

Unfortunately, he does not tell us what to buy in this column. However, I found another column where he gives us five top picks:

Work in Progress -- Five Stocks I'm Mulling Over: John Dorfman
By John Dorfman

Let me cut to the chase:

Here are five stocks
I'm considering buying, on which I haven't yet made a decision.

The first candidate is K-Swiss Inc., a small maker of tennis
shoes and other athletic apparel...

A second candidate is undeniably influenced by fads. It's
Wet Seal Inc., which sells clothing at retail primarily to girls
age 13 to 18...

Triumph Group Inc., based in Wayne, Pennsylvania, makes a
variety of aircraft parts...

I like Triumph stock, but then I also like Precision
Castparts Corp., a Portland, Oregon, company that makes castings
for jet engines...

Churchill Downs Inc. is another one that intrigues me. My
friend Frank Curzio, a money manager in Queens, New York, owns it
and called it to my attention. Based in Louisville, Kentucky,
Churchill Downs runs the racetrack where the Kentucky Derby is
run each year. It also has racing and simulcast-wagering
operations in Florida and Indiana....

So there you have it, get out of tech and into tennis shows, girl's clothing, aircraft parts, and gambling. Of course, he hasn't decided yet, maybe they are too risky for him.

How do these guys make any money?

Lindy,

Did you notice how well Compaq performed over the 15 years compared to Intel in spite of its descent from the throne and poor performance over the past few years? If only an investor had sold at or near the top in early 1999...like all the Compaq executives did! Better yet, once Compaq lost its 2x nearest competitor market share back in 1996/97 an investor that sold would have done quite well.

siliconinvestor.com

To be fair, this is not the best comparison because it only shows the return for the 180 month period. If we venture back to the beginnings of trading shares for Compaq in December of 1983 and compare it to the gorilla of Intel we get proof of our mantra - buy and hold the gorillas:

Intel beats Compaq using this time frame. Of course, going back to the early days of Intel beats just about anything.

Once again, we don't have much to compare it to and I would be curious what the authors are comparing it to over the longer haul. Once again, the technology adoption life cycle for the PC industry and the value chain will probably be the yardstick used in the future because of its length and strength. Also, in terms of true Kings - the field is narrowed down to a few 'biggies' as well. I don't know how it compares to long term performance of Kings in other technology adoption life cycles.

I understand the comment about safety in regards to Dell and AOL and don't want to mislead that the risk aversion is not on the same level as a gorilla. I was simply pointing out the concentrated tornado growth those two experienced. I think a lot of us made a ton of money from those two investments - safe or not.

Hi Gorilla Hunters

How about a show of hands as to who plans on going to Q meeting in San Diego? I have my ducats in hand and would like to see if any or all would be interested in having the first hopefully annual G & K golfing scramble, tournament, outing, whatever.

People ask me what's my handicap? I say it's my swing, obviously. Can no longer blame my astigmatism, right Joel? Send me some PM's or announce proudly and publicly that you are going and whether we should organize a pellet pounding production.

Voop

P. S. Love all the WIND dialogue!
