Ah, yes, Cisco. It set another historical high set today, and, along with QQQ, is the bedrock of my portfolio. For those not following Gorilla Cisco, it has already preannounced that it will meet expectations when it announces on 2/10, which is Cisco-speak for .24 versus a consensus estimate of .23. The market loves the predictability of Cisco's earnings, and so do I <gg>.

Re: Phone.com - Nortel - WAP - Wireless Internet

I believe a volunteer is reporting on Phone.com and WAP - two articles here on Phone.com, Nortel, and WAP

>> NORTEL & PHONE.COM TEAM FOR WAP OVER GPRS

04 February 2000 - Cannes, France

WAP over GPRS received a boost today with the announcement that Nortel Networks and Phone.com will team up to integrate their offerings.

Nortel will bring its GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) network infrastructure - which allows GSM operators to offer always-on, higher speed data rates for mobiles - to the party.

It will work with Phone.com to optimize the interface between its kit and Phone.com's WAP products which include the UP.browser for handsets and UP.link server software which allows operators to deliver data services like Internet and intranet access to mobile handsets.

A statement from the companies, which made the announcement at the GSM World Congress in Cannes today, said they intend to construct interfaces between the products to "achieve optimal implementation of WAP over GPRS".

The first areas the companies will work on are set to be billing, prepaid services, location-based services and "push" information services. No timeframe was given for the partnership.

WAP mobile data services currently operate at speeds of 9.6 Kbps or 14.4 Kbps on regular GSM networks. Initial GPRS-enabled phones will allow download speeds of around 56Kbps - similar to fixed modem speeds - and are set to enhance existing WAP services as well as allow new ones that require higher bandwidth to be developed.

NORTEL CHAMPIONS THE WIRELESS INTERNET

Nortel Networks has announced at the GSM World Congress an alliance with Hewlett-Packard to facilitate the delivery of end-to-end wireless Internet solutions with HP Jornada Handheld PCs.

Nortel Networks has announced at the GSM World Congress an alliance with Hewlett-Packard to facilitate the delivery of end-to-end wireless Internet solutions with HP Jornada Handheld Pcs. As part of this relationship, HP will provide mobile personal appliances to access information and services on the Internet in conjunction with Nortel Networks Wireless Internet network solution. The initial implementation of Nortel's GPRS wireless solution will be available in the third quarter of this year.

Nortel Networks used the GSM World Congress to launch an innovative LAN-based wireless office solution, called IPicoNode. Using this solution, corporate users will soon be accessing the Internet or their company's intranet, make data and voice calls from one single wireless device. Nortel is demonstrating IPicoNode applications at the World Congress jointly with France Telecom Mobiles. Fully integrated into the operator's Itineris GSM network, this live demo allows GSM operators and corporate end-users to fully understand the benefits of the IPicoNode solution as the ultimate GSM fixed-mobile solution for the corporate market place. Live demonstrated benefits include Intelligent Call Routing, as well as multi-site LAN connectivity .

Nortel also announced the formation of a collaborative agreement with Phone.com to develop integrated WAP applications and solutions. The two vendors have agreed to work together to provide unique end-to-end WAP solutions to wireless operators that benefit from the integration of Nortel's GSM/GPRS and IP infrastructure products with Phone.com's market leading WAP products and applications. As a planned result of the relationship and joint development projects, Nortel Networks' aim is to build a fully integrated end-to-end WAP solution encompassing Nortel Networks' industry proven IP products, and Phone.com's WAP gateway and off-the-shelf WAP applications. The applications will encompass mobile messaging, mobile organizer and information services combined with carrier class implementation and support.
