$56 was about what DEC about double it's value when the rumors started to fly.....and curiously enough CPQ is at about that magic number (28) right now......

I wonder if HWP will be down to $28 in 3 years too and who the suitor might be then.....

If CPQ got a bad case of indigestion gobbling up DEC just imagine the gas from gobbling up Compaq+Tandem+DEC.....Buuuuurrrrp!!!

To compensate me appropriately for the future mega price this stock is worth. $75 is a conservative $100 in Jan 2002 roughly discounted to present value. Plus 2 times 32.50 sounds fair to me.

El,

My wild ass speculation is base on:

1) HWP stock is almost doubled from its 52 week low
2) CPQ stock is almost half of its 52 week low
3) A HWP takeover of CPQ would be best done with a stock swap
~50% from HWP's low and ~50% difference of CPQ high.

BTW, CPQ now has the highest PE of the group. HWP has the highest market cap.

El. A lot of what a company is worth is what irons they have in the fire, and what they'll look like a couple of years down the road if left to their own devices. CPQ is in the midst of a turnaround, slower than we would like, but a turnaround none the less. Assuming over the next year or two, costs are brought under control, direct sales are increased, and all the new products Capellas keeps talking about come to market (including the internet appliance space), I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the price to be in the $75 to $80 range. It could be more if CPQ again becomes a Wall Street darling. Look at the PE they give Dell. A lot of this depends on whether or not we think Capellas can pull it off. From what I've read of the comraderie of the management evidenced during the analyst meetings, my bet is that he will. It would seem more than unfair to the shareholders that have anguished through these trying times to sell out for $45 when the future value could be so bright. IF this rumor turns out to be true, and the price is $45, this is one shareholder who's going to scream that we got shafted one last time. I'd rather see how this novel plays out on its own.
