The Globalstar phone I'd like to see: Actually it isn't a globalstar phone at all. It's a regular tiny cellphone like the Star-Tac. The regular cellphone would be used exactly as regular cellphones are now, and would be produced as regular cellphones, not as special Globalstar phones. The only difference would be that the user would have the option to use 'satellite mode' when necessary or desirable. Globalstar, in effect would just be another feature of regular old cellphones. Could it work? I think so. First we need to make Globalstar CDMA compatible with plain old CDMA - that should not be too hard. I'm sure they are working on it now. That would eliminate the need for extra hardware in the cellphone. The user would have to switch to 'satellite mode' on demand. That would also generate a signal for the service providers to bill at a different rate. Second, we need to get rid of the big antenna. I can think of two ways to do this. The easiest way would be to provide a small jack in the side of the phone for a portable or car/ship/aircraft mount plug-in Globalstar antenna much like I plug my headphones into my Walkman. Providers could then sell 'globalstar antennas' as an add-on accessory to all their regular cell phones. The second way might be more difficult, but still is possible, I believe. That would be to make the cellphone casing itself the antennae for globalstar service. This would eliminate all the issues regarding the need for a large satellite antenna Third, we need to address the problem of battery size/power. The easiest way to do this is to develop a better battery! Until then, like the antenna, we could sell a 'Globalstar power pack' add-on that simply plugs into the regular cellphone to provide power for globalstar service. I feel this approach addresses two major concerns. No longer would Globalstar be held hostage to the manufacturer's output of specialized phones - the phones would simply be regular cell phones. Second, marketing would be a cinch. With this type of cellphone, every cellphone user would be a potential Globalstar customer. They would only need sign up for the service as an add-on service much like call-waiting is now. Anyway, that's MY vision of Globalstar service and why I am long. I'll bet I wasn't the fist one to think of this either. I'll bet they are working on it right now. For all my grumblings, I truly believe this system will revolutionize telecommunications as we know it. The ability to communicate FROM ANYWHERE is just too irresistable to the typical gregarious human being. Regards, Dave
