Some pretty dire predictions were made, often by industry lobbyists, during the first round of environmental legislation. None of them came to pass; the American environment is in much better shape now than it was in the early '70s, and environmental pressure drove a very real round of industrial advances. Some mistakes were made, of course, but on the whole we came out of that one rather well. That doesn't necessarily mean that the next round of environmental initiatives will be beneficial, but I won't dismiss the possibility out of hand, and I will take the dire warnings - from both sides - with several grains of salt.
