TOKYO (AP) -- Toyota Motor Corp. (TM: news, msgs) has reached separate deals with General Motors Corp. (GM: news, msgs) and Volkswagen on sharing design and development systems, a newspaper reported Wednesday. Toyota will set up common computer systems with the U.S. and German automakers to share information on car and auto parts development by 2001, the Yomiuri Shimbun said. Natsuki Den, a spokeswoman for Toyota, could not confirm the report. The newspaper, Japan's largest, said the companies hope to cut costs and gain advantages as competition to create new technology intensifies in the auto industry. The three companies may also agree to create a unified design system in the future, the Yomiuri said. The Yomiuri said that because the agreement will create a framework for joint auto development, it could be a step toward a mega-alliance between the top carmakers in Japan, North America and Europe.
