Esser urged to say yes to Vodafone

BY CHRIS AYRES,
MEDIA BUSINESS CORRESPONDENT

KLAUS ESSER, chairman of Germany's Mannesmann, came under intense pressure yesterday to accept a "modestly" improved takeover offer from Vodafone AirTouch, as shares in the British mobile phone group soared to a record high of 360p.
A record 500 million shares in Vodafone changed hands as investors scrambled to take a position in the company before its hostile offer for Mannesmann ends on Monday.

It is understood that some fund managers are lobbying Herr Esser to accept the slightly improved offer that Vodafone has already tabled. This gives Mannesmann shareholders 49 per cent of the enlarged company instead of 47.2 per cent, in return for a board recommendation.
