Quantam (yes, not Quantum) went public today. They make microprocessors, I heard? Welcome to the war, whoever you are.

Intel forms pact on 0.13-micron mask technology

TOKYO ? Intel Corp. and Dai Nippon Printing Co. Ltd. (DNP) will jointly develop photomask technologies for a 0.13-micron process that Intel plans to use to manufacture microprocessors next year.

The fruits of the companies' effort will be used by Intel to develop in-house photomask production technology for MPU fabrication in a 0.13-micron process and by DNP to sell photomasks for the 0.13-micron process.

In their joint development work, Intel will focus on the photomask's core technology and DNP on the practical application to volume mask production tuned to each company's semiconductor fabrication.

DNP bought Hitachi Ltd.'s photomask production unit last October. The company worked with Toshiba Corp. in December on R&D for 0.13-micron photomask production technologies. Even within the same 0.13-micron process, drawing methods differ for each semiconductor company, a DNP spokeswoman said. The alliance with Toshiba involves mask production, but Intel's does not, she said.
